TRIPURA, India — Violent communal clashes in the Unakoti district of Tripura have left several Muslim-owned homes, shops and at least one mosque set ablaze, with residents alleging that the attacks followed a dispute over religious donations and that police failed to intervene effectively.

The unrest unfolded on January 10, 2026, in the Saidarpara–Shimultala and Kumarghat areas of Unakoti after a disagreement between a Muslim shop owner and a group reportedly collecting chanda, or donations for a local Hindu temple festival, escalated into widespread violence. Local sources told news outlets that when the shopkeeper refused an immediate request for additional funds, the dispute deteriorated quickly into mob aggression, arson and vandalism targeting Muslim-owned properties.

Eyewitnesses and local residents described a chaotic scene in which a group of attackers allegedly marched through the neighbourhood, vandalising and setting fire to residential homes, small businesses and a mosque. One resident, identified as Mosabbir Ali, said he was attacked and later hospitalised, while several properties were destroyed.

Authorities responded by imposing Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, which prohibits public gatherings of five or more people and restricts rallies and meetings in the affected subdivision. Internet services were also suspended for 48 hours as a precautionary measure to prevent further escalation.

Security Forces Deployed to Restore Order
Police and paramilitary forces — including personnel from the Tripura State Rifles and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) — were deployed to restore calm, conduct flag marches and monitor key points. Officials said multiple arrests had been made in connection with the violence, and that law enforcement authorities were investigating the incidents.

Local administrators maintain that law and order has largely been restored, though residents report ongoing fear and displacement, as families attempt to recover from physical and economic loss. Muslim community members conveyed deep concern that despite the heavy police presence during the violence, the response was “too late” and insufficient to protect vulnerable civilians.

Historical and Communal Context
The violence in Tripura follows a pattern of communal tensions in parts of India where disputes related to religion, land or cultural events occasionally flare into broader conflicts. In recent years, similar episodes — such as mosque vandalisation and attacks on Muslim properties — have drawn criticism from rights groups and political observers who warn of increasing polarisation at local levels.

India’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion and equal protection under the law, obligating police and civil authorities to prosecute acts of arson and communal violence regardless of the victims’ religious identity. Advocacy organisations have called for thorough investigations and accountability, with some community leaders seeking independent oversight of the response to ensure justice for those affected.

Impact on Muslim Residents
For Muslim families in the Unakoti district, the arson attack has triggered profound anxiety and insecurity. Beyond the material loss of homes and livelihoods, the destruction of a mosque — a centre not only of worship but also of community cohesion — deepens concerns about minority protection within the broader socio-political landscape of India’s northeast.

National and international human rights organisations often emphasise that communal violence undermines social harmony and the rule of law. They have urged respect for constitutional safeguards, equitable policing, and transparent legal proceedings to address grievances and prevent recurrence of such clashes.

As the situation continues to develop, local leaders and civic groups are calling for impartial investigation, rehabilitation support for victims, and concrete steps to strengthen communal peacebuilding efforts in a region marked by demographic diversity.
